William E. Wooten maintains a comprehensive intellectual property (IP) practice, with an emphasis on preparation, prosecution, diligence, and counseling in patent matters, particularly those involving computer software or networking technologies. Will is a former equity shareholder of a leading national IP boutique and has more than a decade and a half of experience helping clients procure and navigate IP rights. He has successfully prepared and prosecuted hundreds of bespoke patent applications on behalf of a diverse base of clients, including members of the Fortune 500, startups, universities, and individual inventors.
Will is among the most tried and tested active U.S. patent prosecutors. Early in his career, Will drafted, prepared, and filed all the applications from which the eleven patents asserted in Centripetal Networks, Inc. v. Cisco Systems, Inc. issued, including the four underlying the $2.6+ billion judgment then widely regarded as the largest patent verdict in history. Exceedingly few practitioners have had an analogous sample of their work subjected to comparable scrutiny.
Will earned his B.S. in computer science summa cum laude at North Carolina State University and his J.D. with honors at the University of North Carolina School of Law, where he was a member of the North Carolina Law Review and received the Gressman-Pollitt award for oral advocacy. Prior to attending law school, Will served as an officer in the U.S. Navy and worked in information technology for an aerospace wire manufacturer. Will is admitted to the bars of the state of North Carolina and the District of Columbia, and he is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
